Taco Tour Complete

This past Saturday, the Food Writing Project was shown around Queens by Jeff Orlick (check out his great blog, with more info on how to sign up for your own tour, here).  In addition to the usual funding provided by NY Cares, the 82nd Street Partnership of Jackson Heights, Queens, offered generous funding.

We went to Taco Bell and Taqueria Coatzingo to compare and contrast a fast food Mexican place with a "mom and pop" place.  Check back for updates on our blogs.

The Food Writing Project Tries Ethiopian!

On Saturday, May 19, the Food Writing Project hopped on the subway and headed Uptown to Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant on 135th Street.  It was a beautiful day, and much food and fun was had.  Check the blogs soon for updates!

Blue Smoke Feast Completed

This weekend the Food Writing Project visited Blue Smoke, a restaurant which serves various regional styles of barbecue.  Much food was eaten, and much fun was had.  We were even treated to a tour of the meat smokers!

Thanks to Blue Smoke for providing a generous discount to our students, and for allowing us a behind-the-scenes look.  The Project will be meeting on May 5, 2012 to write about our experiences.

Better Late Than Never

The Food Writing Project is embarrassingly behind on posting this, but almost 3 weeks ago, on Saturday March 31 2012, we met at Simon Baruch Middle School with a special guest speaker, Adam Kuban, the founder of Slice, among other things.  Adam gave individualized feedback to all of our students and volunteers on their blogs, and discussed his personal tale of rising through the food blogosphere.

Next up: Blue Smoke for BBQ on Saturday, April 21!

Pizza Tour Completed

Yesterday, the Food Writing Project went on a pizza tour given by Scott's Pizza Tours.  Our tour guide was the man himself - Scott - and this fellow knows more about pizza than is probably advisable for the average human being.  He was a great guide, to say the least, and his enthusiasm was infectious.

Here are some stats from our trip.  Students and volunteers will be blogging next weekend about our experience.  Check back here for the updates!

People count:

6 New York Cares volunteers
1 Simon Baruch teacher
5 Simon Baruch students

Pizza Count

Keste Pizzeria - a classic Naples pizzeria. We sampled a mast'nicola ("the first pizza" - lard or olive oil, tons of pecorino romano, basil) and a margherita (what many people think is the first pizza - tomatoes, mozzarella, basil).

John's Pizzera - a classic New York-style coal oven pizzeria.  We sampled the basic pie, red sauce and mozzarrella - no toppings.

Famous Ben's - a classic Sicilian pizzeria.  We had a palermo pizza, which is square and topped with sauce, onions, and breadcrumbs.
